Ask what happens when the first wear item fails. A useful circular specification records the service route, replaceable parts, inspection criteria and material recovery route before comparing supplier prices.
Start with the service function
The European Environment Agency identifies repair, reuse and remanufacturing as ways to keep products and resources in use. It also cautions that extending a product's life does not always deliver the best environmental outcome when operation drives much of its impact.
Our procurement recommendation is to define the function first: required output, operating environment, maintenance access and acceptance criteria. Compare a new assembly with repair or replacement of its wear items under the same duty. Include downtime, inspection, transport and operating energy in the comparison. Recycled content alone does not answer whether the assembly can be maintained.

Make repairability a testable requirement
EEA's circular design briefing explains that design affects the potential for reuse, repair and remanufacturing, as well as material use and recyclability. Turn that principle into evidence requests rather than a broad promise of sustainability.
The following checklist is a practical synthesis for an RFQ. Ask the supplier to demonstrate the service sequence on a representative assembly and record any limits.
- Identify consumable and wear parts with stable part numbers and a stated availability period.
- Provide an exploded drawing, disassembly sequence and required service tools.
- Explain which connections can be opened and reassembled without damaging retained parts.
- State inspection and replacement criteria, together with the test needed before return to service.
- Identify material grades, coatings and a realistic route for separating and recovering them.

Qualify the remanufacturing route
SKF describes bearing remanufacturing as a controlled process involving inspection against specifications, component assessment and documented treatment. The appropriate work depends on the bearing's condition; a used component is not automatically suitable for another service interval.
For an industrial repair programme, request the original identification, service history where available, assessment report, scope of work and final acceptance record. Have the responsible engineer approve suitability for the application. Avoid treating cosmetic cleaning as evidence of restored performance. Where condition or history cannot be established, compare replacement instead of assuming repair will be viable.

Compare evidence, then run a pilot
Before awarding a programme, create one comparison sheet: purchase or repair cost, outage duration, expected service requirement, operating consumption, evidence supplied and end-of-use route. Record the assumptions behind any environmental comparison, including the baseline and activities counted. A claim about one remanufactured bearing should not become a claim about every product in a catalogue.
A useful next step is a supervised pilot on an application approved by your engineering team. Review inspection results, service time and parts availability before expanding. The most informative supplier answer may be a clearly documented limitation.
Practical takeaways
- Specify the service function and acceptance criteria before comparing circular options.
- Ask for drawings, wear-part availability and a demonstrated service sequence.
- Approve repair suitability from inspection evidence; substantiate environmental comparisons separately.
Useful questions, clear answers
Does recycled content prove that a component is circular?
It describes one material attribute. Evaluate repair access, usable lifetime, spare parts, reuse suitability and the recovery route as separate procurement questions.
What should a remanufacturing quotation include?
Request identification, assessment scope, proposed work, acceptance tests, exclusions, turnaround and the records supplied after completion. Confirm suitability with the responsible engineer.
